Which headset should I buy?
The following are examples of headsets recommended for use in the virtual classroom.

Cyber Accoustics AC 400

Plantronics Monoaural Speech Recognition Headset w/Mic

Logitech Premium Stereo Headset

Labtec Voice Access Headphones
These are just examples of headsets that will work in the virtual classroom. You can find these headsets at any computer or eletronics stores. Make sure you buy a headset for a computer, as opposed to those for a cell phone.
How do I connect my headset?
There are 2 plugs on the end of your headset. They are usually labeled by different colored bands on the tips. The plug with the red or pink bands is the microphone plug. The plug with the black bands is the speakers plug.

If you have colored jacks in the back of your computer, you can plug the microphone plug (with the pink bands) into the pink colored microphone jack. The speaker plug (with the black bands) plugs into the green colored speaker jack. Nothing gets plugged into the blue jack.

If you do not have colored jacks in the back of your computer, you can plug the microphone plug (with the pink bands) into the jack with the picture of a microphone under it. The speaker plug (with the black bands) plugs into the jack with the picture of an arrow pointing to the left under it. Nothing gets plugged into the jack with the arrow pointing to the right under it.

How can I check my microphone settings?
The following pictures show how to check that your volume and record settings are set correctly for the iLinc classroom. Generally, these settings are set correctly. But, if you are having problems with your microphone, you may want to check these settings
In the lower right hand corner of the screen there should be a gray or yellow speaker icon(see picture). Double clicking it will give you your speaker controls. If you do not have a speaker icon, your sound card is not set up and you will need to call your LAN Administrator.
Your display will have a set of slider bars as shown on below. First, ensure that your master volume is raised and that none of the mute boxes are checked. Then click on "Options" and "Properties".

The dialogue box shown allows you to select "Recording Controls". Click the Recording radio button, make sure the checkbox to the left of Microphone is checked, and then click "OK".

You now have access to the Recording Properties. Here you need to ensure that the Microphone volume is pushed up, and that the "Select" box under Microphone is checked. Most computers will allow you to choose only one source from which to record. You want to select "Microphone", then click "OK".

You now have completed any set up necesary for your audio settings. You may "X" out of this window and continue with joining a iLinc class. Enjoy!
